Aging
in Africa (Spring 2011)
The global population is aging. Economic security, health and
disability, and living conditions in later life are policy concerns
throughout the world. However, the specific challenges differ
considerably from continent to continent and between and within
countries – especially within Africa. The majority of the world's
population of older people (61 per cent, or 355 million) live in poorer
African countries. One good thing about the older Africans, however, is
that they are perceived as repositories of information and wisdom and
so they are well respected.
