108-Year-Old Woman Can Still Touch Toes

UPI

January 20, 2010

Catherine Reed, a Washington State woman who lived on her own until she was 107, celebrated her 108th birthday Tuesday, her daughter said.

Reed can still touch her toes, although she has lost most of her hearing, The Seattle Times reported. She moved into a nursing home in Bothell in June, her daughter, Barbara Gibson, said.

Reed was born in 1902 in St. Louis. She married at the age of 17 and she and her husband ran motels and restaurants in Missouri and New Mexico until his death 30 years ago.

The couple had three children, Gibson, 68, Frank Reed, 89, and Jimmy Reed, 79.

Gibson said her mother remained vigorous until she was well over the century mark. Until she was 103, she would walk 3 miles round trip from Bothell to Woodinville to buy groceries and was a familiar sight to users of a trail between the two towns.

At the age of 101, Reed visited San Francisco and walked the Golden Gate Bridge.

Reed has no hints about living a long life.

"The good Lord is the one who gives you your time," she said. "I don't want to make any fuss about it. I'm just an old woman.
