Elderly Left Without Funding, Care

By Chellie Mills, kfor.com

Congress has now taken their Memorial Day recess period, leaving many issues still on the table. One of those left without resolve impacts those who care for our elderly. In fact, caregivers say without action by Congress, your loved ones may not be able to get quality care. Thursday, a special meeting of caregivers was held to discuss the issue.

They are fearful that a lack of action on Capitol Hill will slice into the services on which the elderly rely.

Congress has left an extension to Federal Medicaid relief unresolved; meaning, the money caregivers depend on may run out at the end of the year.

Caregivers could face layoffs if funding isn't provided and many facilities may be forced to shut their doors.

It is a sad reality considering in the past decade more than 100 Oklahoma facilities have had to close due to a lack of funding.

At Thursday's meeting, certified nurse assistants were given the chance to e-mail their request for the funding straight to Capitol Hill.

They say in Oklahoma the Medicaid funding, which helps more than 70 percent of those in nursing homes, is already severely lacking and they rely heavily on federal aid.
