Malawian President and current African Union chairperson Bingu Wa Mutharika on Wednesday said that societies in Africa should create an enabling environment for the elderly in order for them to continue serving their nations.

Speaking during the official opening of the African Elderly Conference in the capital Lilongwe, the president said the elderly were part and parcel of African societies and therefore, have the right to enjoy socio-economic development.

"The elderly are our assets because they impart knowledge to the younger generation in order for them to live as good citizens," he said.

He added that the elderly meet a lot of challenges in society, like being accused of practicing witchcraft. There was therefore a need for the continent to be sensitized on the plight of senior citizens.

The conference, which is exploring ways to solve the socio-economic challenges of the elderly, has attracted several African countries Africa.
