Over 800 Elderly Get Social Services Department Aid

A total of 8.950 elderly persons in rural communities and retirement houses in central province of Kwanza Sul are receiving regular assistance with several goods from the provincial Department of the Ministry of Social Welfare, under the Government’s “Home Basket” programme for vulnerable groups.

The information was released to Angop by the provincial director of the sector, Manuel Macedo, who said the assistance consists of a basket of foodstuffs.

According o the official, there are in the province 104,950 elderly persons, 28,587 of whom are registered, according to information from the district office of the Welfare Ministry.

According to Manuel Macedo, the province has two retirement houses providing shelter for 34 elderly people.

The provincial department of the Welfare Ministry serves five vulnerable groups that relay on assistance. They are those of the elderly, children, people with disability, refugees and returnees.
