 Labor Woos Elderly Voters

By Daisy Huntly, The Daily Advertiser

The Labor Party is dangling a new carrot in the lead-up to the election -this time promising senior Australians an almost $100 million package to support older citizens in the workforce and grandparent carers.

Under the Delivering For Seniors package, aged pensioners could earn up to $250 a fortnight without it affecting their payment and can build up an income bank to $6500 to offset more earning when they do work.

Up to 7500 mature-age workers will receive training and assessment assistance to have their skills recognised with a qualification or statement of attainment.

An age discrimination commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission has also been promised, as has the establishment of a peer support program for grandparent carers and greater protection for seniors with reverse mortgages.

Labor candidate for Riverina, Robyn Hakelis, was unreachable yesterday.

Each of the candidates running for the seat of Riverina that were contacted by The Daily Advertiser agreed that more needs to be done for senior citizens.
